• Know exactly where your muster station is and what responsibilities you have in case of abandonment. Be aware of the chain of command and follow instructions. Have a working understanding of the life raft and where the secure points are on the vessel to secure the painter.

• Be aware of the sea state and weather conditions, know the safe evacuation procedures from vessel to life raft and be aware of the safety of the others in the group.
  

• Prevent the life raft from drifting to far from the vessel and avoid un necessary chafing of the life raft on the hull of the vessel.

• Know what protocol to adopt when faced with an abandonment situation. And if time permits to take additional clothing.
